Santa’s Helpers benefit
Santa’s Helpers will get under way at the Old Settler’s Reunion Pavilion on Saturday, Nov. 17, beginning with a concert by the Alvarado Road Show at 3:30 p.m.

Johnson County Veterans Council
The Johnson County Veterans Council will sponsor an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 8 - 11 a.m. Nov. 17, at the Cleburne Elks Lodge, 124 Farm-to-Market 1434. The price is $6 for adults and children 12 and under are free. There will also be a “turkey shoot” contest.

The city of Alvarado has announced that city trash pickup after Thanksgiving will be moved to Saturday, Nov. 24.
Venus Christmas on the Square
The Greater Venus Chamber of Commerce announces Christmas on the Square will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. Santa will arrive at 2 p.m. and photographs with Santa will be taken after 2. There will be food, arts and crafts vendors and entertainment, a spokesman said.
Mom 2 Mom
Mom 2 Mom is a group organized by stay-at-home moms with children from birth through 5 years old.
“We exist to encourage moms of preschoolers to develop skills for motherhood, their walk with Christ, as well as providing a social avenue to meet other moms,” a spokesman said. “We meet the second Monday of each month and we also get together for play dates and mom’s nights out.”

Cleburne’s transportation service has extended its services to all of Johnson County.
Cletran offers two types of services - daily bus routes with schedules and demand response buses. Daily buses depart Cleburne for downtown Fort Worth three times a day, with stops in Joshua and Burleson.
Cletran operation supervisor Rhonda Tatum said regular runs from Alvarado to Cleburne are $8. People older than age 60 or younger than 18 years of age can purchase $40 passes for half price.
The service will operate from 6 a.m.-5 p.m. (the last pickup time) Monday-Friday.
According to a city/county transportation publication, people who are extremely ill, have contagious diseases or who are severely injured may not be transported, nor will those intoxicated or violent passengers who pose a threat to the driver or themselves be allowed to ride, at the driver’s discretion.

Johnson County Head Start
The Johnson County Head Start is recruiting for 2007-2008. Services include health and social services referrals, individualized education plans and opportunities for socialization and family partnership agreements.
When applying for the program, parents or guardians will need documentation of the child’s physical and dental records, birth certificates and immunization records. Family must meet income guidelines to qualify and provide proof of income for the past 12 months.
Children with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The Head Start Program does not discriminate against race, age, religion, creed, sex, national origin, political beliefs or any disabling conditions.

Utility assistance funds available
Funding is available to help low income families in Johnson County to assist with paying utility bills.
“If you are income eligible and meet all requirements, you may qualify for help with your utility bills,” a spokesman said. “Due to program criteria, applications are rated by priority. Therefore, it may not be possible to give immediate attention to applicants holding a notice of termination.”

American Legion Adopt-a-Soldier
American Legion Auxiliary 426 is sponsoring an Adopt-a-Soldier program benefiting a deployed company in Iraq. Volunteers would commit to send a package once a month to the soldiers until their deployment ends. Packages should include things such as foot powder, baby powder, facial tissues, Desenex/A&D ointment, antibiotic ointment, dental floss, Vicks VapoRub, cotton swabs, lip balm, sunscreen/sunblock, shaving cream, gum, hard candy, crackers, popcorn, books/magazines, 2007 calendars, hygiene packs, air fresheners, unscented baby wipes, anti-perspirant/deodorant, fabric deodorizer, mouthwash and scented candles.

Lillian 4-H Club
The Lillian 4-H Club meets the second Wednesday of each month at the United Cooperative Services community room at Interstate 35 and Bethesda Road. 4-H offers a wide variety of activities as well as community service opportunities for youth.

Meals-on-Wheels and the Alvarado Senior Citizens Center are looking for volunteers to deliver meals to the homebound seniors in Alvarado. It only takes 30 minutes one day a week to help these seniors who are unable to fix meals for themselves or who are handicapped and look forward to seeing the volunteer who brings their lunch.
