Countdown to Christmas photos

Photographs of children ages infant-5 years old are being accepted for the annual Daily Light Countdown to Christmas feature. The countdown runs from Thanksgiving Day through Christmas Day, with all photos to be given to Sharon Rexrode at the Daily Light.

Bring photos to the Daily Light, 200 W. Marvin, e-mail to or mail to P.O. Box 877, Waxahachie, TX 75168.

First-come, first-served. All information must be printed and legible. The need information is the child’s name, age and names of parents.

Christmas past

Christmas past photographs will return to the Daily Light beginning Friday, Nov. 23. Photographs of children celebrating Christmas in past years may be submitted to or brought into the newspaper office, 200 W. Marvin St., Waxahachie. Ask for Amy Burk. Include the names and ages of the children in the photograph and the year the photograph was taken. Master Gardener training

Applications are now available for the 2008 Master Gardener Training program. Texas Master Gardeners are trained members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens.

The time commitment is from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday during the month of February. Trainees also will be asked to complete 75 hours of volunteer service before graduating from the Master Gardener program.

Application forms are available on the Ellis County Master Gardener’s Web site at or by calling 972-825-5175. Tuition for the program is $100.

Class size is limited and attendance is required at all sessions to complete the program. Deadline for application is Jan. 11.

Aggie Moms

The Ellis County Aggie Moms invite all Ellis County mothers of Aggies to their monthly meeting at First United Methodist Church banquet hall, 505 W Marvin, in Waxahachie, at 7 p.m. Nov. 19. Membership and attendance at any Ellis County Aggie Mom’s function gets one’s name in for a drawing for a book scholarship.

The group will play Aggie Bingo, share Aggie brags and enjoy refreshments.

Thanksgiving dinner

The College Street Church of Christ invites the community to join its members for the 16th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Everyone in the community that does not have family in town or does not have other plans is encourages to attend. This year’s dinner will consist of turkey and dressing, green beans, mashed potatoes and many other traditional sides as well as great deserts including pumpkin pie. Shut-ins who may not be able to come may call for a meal to be delivered to their home.

“We are always thrilled to host this annual dinner to show our love and care to the people of our community,” a spokesman said. “Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for people to be together and join in fellowship with each other. This gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy a great time together and is just one small way we can give back to the community.”

The dinner will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22.

Teen Movie Saturday

Teen Movie Saturday at Nicholas P. Sims Library is from 2:30-4:50 p.m. Nov. 24. This month’s feature stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco. In this third installment of the Spider-Man trilogy, Peter Parker has managed to strike a balance between his devotion to M.J. and his duties as a superhero. When his suit suddenly turns black and enhances his power, it brings out a vengeful side that he must struggle to control while battling two of the most feared villains yet, Sandman and Venom. This movie is rated PG-13.

“Enjoy popcorn and a movie on the big screen,” a spokesman said. “As with all library programs, this movie is free of charge.”

Vendors, entertainers, sponsors needed

The Waxahachie Downtown Merchants Association will host its second annual Downtown Victorian Christmas Festival this year Nov. 23-25, Dec. 1-2 and Dec. 8-9 around the historic courthouse square.

The association is looking for Victorian-themed vendors, entertainers and sponsors that are interested in being a part of this holiday family favorite event.

Friends of Sims Library

The Friends of Sims Library service organization will meet at 10 a.m. in the library meeting room on Nov. 26.

The annual Christmas on the Square, sponsored by the Venus Chamber of Commerce, will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.

Christmas stroll in Waxahachie

Calling all parade enthusiasts - there’s going to be a new event in town this holiday season. Waxahachie’s Downtown Victorian Christmas Festival is introducing a new night-time lighted Christmas stroll through downtown.

Think of cool brisk weather, carolers, lights, bells and bows and one has the makings for a Victorian Christmas stroll to be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.

Candlelight vigil

MADD Waxahachie will hold a candlelight vigil of remembrance and hope for family members, friends and loved ones who have been killed or injured by drunk or impaired drivers from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Rogers Hotel, 103 E. Main St., Waxahachie.

GWRRA Toy Drive

Gold Wing Road Riders Association, chapter W-2, will host its annual toy drive from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 15, at Citizens National Bank.

New wrapped toys or cash will be accepted with all toys and proceeds benefiting local charities.

“This toy drive is to simply help the kids in Ellis County,” a spokesman said.

Blood drive

Oversight committee

The Ellis County Bond Oversight Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7 in the second floor courtroom of the Ellis County Courthouse. The committee reviews progress on the county’s facilities projects, including the courts and administration building and the jail addition.
