Not doing so well with telling jokes to your co-workers at the office? If so, After Hours Improv has the answer.

The Ellis County-based improvisational troupe will host an adult workshop for three Saturdays: June 2, 9 and 16. The workshops will be from 9 a.m.-noon at the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce for a fee of only $50.

For those who aren’t aware of what improvisation or “improv” is, it is simply the act of doing something at the spur of the moment. It not only relates to comedy, but other aspects of life such as business, communication and even sports.

Ismael “Smiley” Alfaro and his wife, Shari, are co-founders of After Hours, which has been up and running since 2004.

“Our improv was born out of a workshop we attended,” Smiley said. “We love doing improv shows so we thought we would take it to another level. We started performing at various restaurants and coffee shops. In 2007, we signed a contract with Texas Theater and that’s what we have been doing ever since.”

Since Smiley started his improv career at a workshop, he figures it is a way he could give back to the world of improv by hosting one of his own.

“The workshop was something we wanted to offer to the community,” he said. “We wanted people to get introduced with improv. It is for anyone who has the desire to learn. Even people with a background in drama can come sharpen up their skills.”

Smiley also said that those interested in joining After Hours Improv, coming to a workshop is the way to go.

“People wanted to know how our group was formed and how they could audition,” Smiley said. “The first step is to take our workshop classes. It’s a great way to evaluate and bring in different cast members to the group.”

Even for those who aren’t interested in becoming the next cast member, Smiley and his wife believe the workshop can still be of great benefit.

“It is a great way to sharpen your communication skills,” Smiley said. “Even if you are just coming to learn the fundamentals of improvisation skills, it’s a great way to meet people who have similar interests in drama and improv comedy.”
