PALMER — The Palmer Police Department has filed multiple charges against a 27-year-old Coppell man who was taken into custody after allegedly fleeing police and getting into an auto accident in the early morning hours of March 6.
In an affidavit for arrest, officer Samuel Melendez said he was monitoring southbound traffic at about 3:50 a.m. near the 260-mile marker on Interstate 45 when his radar clocked a vehicle traveling 102 miles per hour.
“I pursued the vehicle with my emergency lights and siren on. The vehicle failed to yield,” Melendez stated in the affidavit, saying that the suspect vehicle continued south at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.
“The vehicle was driving erratically, almost striking other vehicles and median barriers,” Melendez said. “At approximately the 242-mile marker, the vehicle collided with the rear of another vehicle that was also traveling southbound.”
All five occupants of the other vehicle were transported to the hospital, according to the affidavit.
Melendez took Dhruv Madhukar Dave, who refused medical treatment on scene, into custody, subsequently transporting him to a local emergency room for a mandatory blood draw.
In his affidavit, Melendez states that Dave had an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person and glossy, bloodshot eyes. Melendez also states he observed an open bottle of Budweiser in Dave’s vehicle.
Dave was subsequently booked into Wayne McCollum Detention Center on charges of intoxication assault with a vehicle (five felony charges), evading arrest/detention with a vehicle (felony) and driving while intoxicated (misdemeanor). He remains in custody on total bonds of $106,000.
