REAGOR SPRINGS Ė Department of Public Safety troopers investigated a collision between a car and train late Saturday morning.

Troopers Richard Hoover and DíJae Vela responded to the scene in the 1300 block of U.S. Highway 287 at about 11:50 a.m., finding an older model four-door passenger vehicle that had been struck by a southbound BSNF train.

The driver told the troopers he was running out of gas and turned west onto a private driveway at that crossing to try to coast to a nearby farmhouse. He said he ran out of gas on top of the railroad tracks and exited his vehicle, which remained on the tracks.

As the driver was walking to the house to seek aid, the train came down the tracks, with a passenger in the vehicle telling troopers he was able to exit the car before it was struck.

Railroad officials also were summoned to conduct an investigation of the accident.

The driver, whose name was not immediately available, was taken into custody on an outstanding traffic warrant out of the Waxahachie Police Department.
