NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is lower at midday, led by losses among technology stocks.
Financial stocks, which led the market in the early going, are mostly higher after the government's latest pledge for more aid for banks.
The news follows a Wall Street Journal report that Citigroup is in talks for the government to boost its stake in the bank to as much as 40 percent. The report lessens some of the uncertainty about the company, but investors are still waiting for more details of the government's plans.
Meanwhile, investors are selling off technology stocks amid growing fears that no industry is safe from the eroding economy.
In midday trading, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 88 points to the 7,277 level. Broader stock indexes are also down.
