HOUSTON (AP) - Federal authorities are dispatching task forces that detect document and immigration benefit fraud to Houston and Puerto Rico.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Wednesday the task forces will work to deter the use of counterfeit identity documents such as fake driver's licenses, birth certificates, Social Security Cards or passports. They also will focus on fraud in applications to obtain citizenship, political asylum, visas or other immigration benefits.
Document and benefit fraud task forces already operate in 17 cities, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, St. Paul and San Francisco.
The task forces include investigators from ICE, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the State Department, the Department of Labor, the Social Security Administration, and other agencies.
