RED OAK - Red Oak ISD police are investigating a burglary reported at the county tax office, which is located on district property at 101 Live Oak Road.

County Tax Assessor-Collector John Bridges said the offense occurred either Wednesday night or early Thursday morning of last week. There were no signs of forced entry and employees immediately contacted police upon discovering the missing money after the start of the business day Thursday, he said.

The tax office’s office hours are from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at this branch of the county tax office, which collects payments for several taxing entities. Those entities will not be shorted in their receipts as a result of the burglary, Bridges said.

Yesterday afternoon, Bridges said he was awaiting an update from the police and could not provide additional details pending the ongoing investigation.

In an interview this morning, Red Oak ISD police investigator Erik Scott said he plans to meet with Bridges later this afternoon to get more information. Due to the case involving a governmental agency and funds, Scott said he also has contacted the Texas Rangers to see if they want to assist with the investigation.

Scott said $9,853 in cash was taken.
