Ennis Lions coaches are trying something a little different this summer.

In the midst of preperations for the upcoming season, the coaches are preparing lessons, but not for the players.

‘Football 101’ is an educational tool designed specifically for the ladies in the community to learn a little more about the sport.

“We are trying to provide the basics of the sport to the ladies without making them feel self conscious for asking questions,” said Coach Sam Harrell.

The class which will feature presentations by several of the Ennis ISD coaches will cover offensive and defensive positions, basic penalties, an explanation of the equipment (with one lucky student volunteering to wear the gear), a run down about what makes Ennis football unique, followed by a question and answer period.

“The students will be offered brunch with their registration fee and also a special t-shirt to commemorate the day,” Harrell said.

The idea came to Harrell after hearing about how similar programs worked at schools his sons attend.

“Both of my sons attend universities that offer the program and while checking out their Web sites I saw the agenda for a similar program and thought it could work here,” he said.

The class will be held August 4 and registration ends July 18.
