Add one more to Alvarado’s growing number of merchants.

Friends, family, chamber members, community leaders, office staff and the State Farm Insurance mascot, “Good Neigh Bear,” were on hand Friday for the grand opening of Angie McWilliam State Farm Insurance Agency at 900 N. Cummings Drive.

McWilliam, who has been employed by the company for nine years, moved to Cleburne with her family when she was 5 years old. She attended public schools from kindergarten until her graduation from Cleburne High School. She continued her education at Texas A&M University, where graduated with a degree in speech communications.

“It was one of those referral things. A mutual friend told my mother about an opening at the agency in Cleburne and then, of course, people knowing my mother and daddy really helped a lot,” McWilliam said of how she became involved in insurance.

McWilliam worked for State Farm agent Kim Bagley from 1999 to 2001 and then worked for agent Jan Greathouse until May 2007.

McWilliam said Bagley contacted her and told her the company was looking for an energetic person to be an agent.

“That’s when the seed was planted,” McWilliam said. She talked with a State Farm executive and told him of her desire to have an agency of her own with a desire to go to Alvarado and the agent said he would back her.

“I fell in love with the business,” McWilliam said. “Ever since 1999, I wanted to do this and I wanted to do it in a small town.”

She said she’s excited about her insurance career and being in Alvarado.

“I have so enjoyed working here,” she said. “It’s been so much fun being a part of the community and meeting the people here. When we first opened up, I went around town meeting people … and people have just really accepted me here.”

She attributes much of her success in life to family.

“I have nothing but good memories of growing up. Our family has always been so close and that’s probably why I have a positive attitude today,” McWilliam said, saying she advises her daughters to find the positive in everything they do.

“I tell them, ‘Don’t be a negative Nellie,’ which is in reference to the girl on ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ ” McWilliam said with a smile.

She is married to John McWilliam, an auto body technician; they have three daughters, Morgann, 8, Macey, 7, and Faith, 6.

McWilliam is one of two daughters of Mike and Sadie Hall of Crowley, who were on hand at the grand opening. She also has one brother.

The McWilliams live in Keene, but, Angie said, “We are planning to move this way as quickly as we can.”
