The Red Oak Lady Hawks have nestled in nicely atop their new volleyball district after the first two matches.
Red Oak improved to 18-14 on the season and 2-0 in District 14-5A with a sweep of Ennis at home on Tuesday, 25-15, 25-6, 25-18. The victory followed a five-set thriller to open the district season last Friday on the road against Joshua, 24-26, 25-19, 25-12, 25-19, 15-9.
Hailey Hunt fired home 20 kills in the five-set win last Friday on 62 swings (.210 hitting percentage), while junior outside hitter Zanobia Willis recorded 12 kills and Kendra Mcruffin had nine.
Hunt also finished second on the team with 25 digs, trailing only freshman Ellie Davis and her 28. Davis also led the team with 32 serves received and did so without an error.
Carley Rushing (14) and Katelyn Malone (13) joined Hunt and Davis with double-digit digs.
Emily Smith led the Lady Hawks with 22 assists and Rushing added 15.
The real key to the Red Oak win came at the service line, though, as they recorded just two errors as a team.
Though the statistics could be a little misleading, the Lady Hawks offense did not struggle against the Ennis Lady Lions on Tuesday. It just never had an opportunity to attack.
Ennis struggled to return Red Oak serves, which allowed Davis to record a season-high seven aces and for the Lady Hawks to send over 74 serves with just three errors in the three-set sweep. The Lady Lions, on the other hand, served the ball in play just 31 times.
Rushing led the Lady Hawks with 10 assists. Rushing posted a team-high 11 digs and Willis led the way with seven kills.
Red Oak returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Friday night on the road against (21-7, 1-0) Corsicana. The Lady Tigers defeated Ennis in four sets in their district opener last Friday and then won a non-district match against 4A Ferris on Tuesday.
