Grandparents Day is on Sunday, but the following Monday starts the 21st annual Grandfriends Week celebration.

WAXAHACHIE

Preparations are underway in Waxahachie schools for the 21st annual Grandfriends Week celebration.

Grandparents Day is Sept. 9, but the week of Sept. 10 – 14 begins a week-long special celebration in Waxahachie as students invite their grandparents, great-grandparents, grand-friends and grand-neighbors to join them for lunch, reading and storytelling.

"Grandfriends Week was developed to encourage intergenerational relations with WISD students," said Melissa Cobb, director of Partners in Education. "This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to enjoy lunch and share conversation and stories with grandparents and grand-friends. We encourage our students to invite their grandparents or grand-friends to join them. We are excited and look forward to this event every year as it is always such a rewarding and special time."

Last year over 4,200 grand-friends participated in this week-long event. Guests joined students from the Waxahachie community, across the state and beyond. Grandfriends will participate at the WISD Childcare Center, Turner Prekindergarten Academy, Clift, Dunaway, Felty, Marvin, Northside, Shackelford, Wedgeworth, Wilemon elementary schools, Coleman Junior High, Finley Junior High and Howard Junior High.
