People are struggling with their faith, I see it all the time. It’s frustrating to this pastor and probably what makes me so cynical, but I love these people. Therefore, my heart breaks and I feel sorry for them. I think we all want to be closer to Jesus than we are, the question is how do we get there?

I like the story about Charlie Brown playing baseball. He had just struck out again, disgusted he said to himself, “I will never make it to the big leagues, I’m just not good enough.

Lucy tried to encourage him, she said, “Charlie Brown, you're thinking too far ahead. What you need to do is set yourself some immediate goals.” Charlie Brown asked, “What are immediate goals?” Lucy replied, “Starting next inning. When you go out to pitch. Just see if you can walk out to the mound without falling down.”

I get that. Some mornings we just try to make it out of bed and to the coffee pot without falling down, but God desires more for us and from us. Let me share 5 immediate spiritual goals that I think might help you build a better foundation for life with Jesus.

First, you need to believe that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). We have to trust God daily in every circumstance. Without this fundamental faith, we might as well give up on the big leagues.

Second, God has a plan for you, and it’s a good plan (Jeremiah 29:11). Because of that, you can practice #1.

Third, no one can thwart the Lord’s plans (Isaiah 14:27). God is sovereign, and nothing can mess up #2.

Fourth, God is for you, and no one can be against you (Romans 8:31). Not your boss, your family, your ex-spouse or your bad neighbor. Be confident, God likes you.

Fifth, everything that happens is filtered through the hands of God, both the good and the bad and God is working it all out for your good and His glory (Romans 8:28). This helps us practice all of the above.

Now go get’em! Go beyond the coffee pot every day! He told me to tell you that.
