A new monthly healthcare membership program hopes to provide more opportunities for residents to receive quality, affordable medical services in Ellis County.
The Concierge NP Clinic opened in Waxahachie last month with a healthcare-business model designed around affordable monthly membership options that could replace some insurance premiums — or even provide those who cannot afford an insurance plan with an affordable and effective alternative.
The new service also promises no copay or deductibles.
Nurse practitioner Keisha McKinsey wants to provide patients the best experience possible without the worries associated with insurance coverage.
McKinsey has served in the healthcare profession for more than 13 years. She thought there had to be a better option for patients to receive care and decided to open the clinic in Waxahachie to provide that choice.
“I live in Waxahachie, and I know that there is a need for primary care providers in the area. With the cost of healthcare and the changes in healthcare, I figured if people had better access to healthcare maybe they could be healthier and better off,” McKinsey said. “This is a primary care clinic, and it is geared toward patients that are not insured or people who have insurance but have high deductibles.”
The National Health Expenditure Accounts measures the country’s annual expenditures for healthcare goods and services, public health activities, government administration, the net cost of health insurance, and investment related to healthcare. The department reports U.S. healthcare spending grew by 4.3 percent in 2016, reaching $3.3 trillion or $10,348 per person. As a share of the nation’s gross domestic product, healthcare spending accounted for 17.9 percent.
In her role as a nurse practitioner, McKinsey can prescribe medication, examine patients, diagnose illnesses, and provide treatment.
McKinsey explained the clinic has a membership program with costs — which range from $25-75 a month — is based on a person’s age. If a patient is not a member, the cost of a visit depends on the type of service.
Memberships provide unlimited clinic visits and access to a person’s provider, telehealth facetime, text, call or email through the clinic's app, at-cost pricing on tests and labs, same or next day appointments, and no copays or deductibles.
Members also receive yearly wellness physical and prevention, assistance with finding lower-priced medications, specialist care and hospital coordination, and provides transparency for all costs.
One service the clinic provides is primary care visits where patients can be seen to help manage chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and regular sick visits. The clinic also offers child wellness exams that study a growth, well-being, and development. It provides parents an opportunity to learn more and ask questions about their child’s health.
The Concierge NP offers well-women exams, which center on promoting good health, disease identification, and health management. Other services include physicals, sport or camp physicals, and full lab testing.
McKinsey noted she works with patients to educate them about the health issues they might have or give them information that will allow them to live a healthier lifestyle. With this knowledge, she hopes that it promotes a higher quality of life for the patient.
“It is not like your regular doctor's office where you will be seen in five or 10 minutes or so. It is more personalized care and education for the patient, so they know what is really going on with them,” McKinsey shared. “I sit down and talk with the patient, give them education handouts, go over their medication and the concerns that they may have.”
McKinsey added she works to get to each of the patients and make sure they are educated on whatever they need.
