Seven Ennis Lion football players signed National Letter of Intent on National Signing Day Feb. 7 to continue their football and academic careers following high school graduation.
After a brief ceremony Wednesday at the Ennis High School gymnasium, head football coach Jack Alvarez announced that seven of this past season’s 29 seniors accepted football scholarships.
K.D. Davis was an early recipient in January, as he inked a National Letter of Intent with the University of North Texas in Denton. Davis was the 2017 District 17-5A Defensive Player of the Year. He played outside linebacker and strong safety for the Lions.
Six other of Davis’ teammates joined him as successful college recruits at the official Feb. 7th National Signing Day.
Those players included Darius Armstrong, cornerback at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma; Brayan Gonzalez, linebacker at Howard Payne University in Brownwood; Salvador Castenada, offensive lineman at Howard Payne University in Brownwood; Kevion Gabriel, cornerback at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls; Chris McDonald, safety at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls; and Tycen Thompson, running back at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches.
Thompson broke the Lions’ all-time rushing record this past fall on Nov. 3, 2017. He finished his Ennis career with 409 carries for 3,340 yards and 39 touchdowns in a three-year varsity career.
Coach Alvarez fully endorsed this great group of young men, stating, “I have been very blessed to get to coach these guys. They are men of character, and I wish them the best as they continue their football and academic careers. I have no doubt they will be successful.”
