Southwestern Assemblies of God University is set to host its second annual Half Marathon and 5k on Saturday, February 3.
The race begins on the university’s campus and then proceeds through the city of Waxahachie. It is considered one the of the fastest courses in North Texas with 85% of the 13.1-mile course on flat ground.
Jason Covarrubias, SAGU head men's and women's cross country coach, said, "We are excited to see how this event has grown. A couple years ago, it was just a thought, and now two years later we will have over 100 runners from all over including four states."
Both races are open to everyone. Along with offering the local, running community an exciting event, it is also a great way to support SAGU’s cross country and track programs. Funds will be used to support these programs. In addition, the half-marathon provides an opportunity for the track team to qualify for the NAIA National Outdoor Championships this May. Other NAIA schools will be competing in the half-marathon.
"A half marathon for many is a feat, and I wholeheartedly agree with that, but the SAGU Half Marathon to many is a race!" exclaimed Covarrubias. "This year we have runners from four NAIA universities who are going to toe the line with hopes of hitting the NAIA national qualifying mark and earn the right to compete in the NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the marathon!
Races begin at 7 a.m. and are followed by the award ceremony at 10:30 a.m. All participants receive a finisher’s shirt and a custom 3-inch finisher’s medal.
Registration for both races is open and racers are accepted up until race time.
