Students across the district will soon welcome over 500 volunteers for the 21st annual Waxahachie ISD “Drop Everything and Read” Day.
Drop Everything and Read Day (DEAR) is planned for Feb. 23. According to a WISD announcement, over 500 volunteers from businesses, service organizations, churches, colleges, and PTO’s will be on WISD campuses to read to classrooms in a communitywide reading effort to stress the value and the joy of reading by providing reading role models.
Businesses, organizations, and individuals are donating books so that every elementary classroom in Waxahachie ISD has at least one new book for the day. Since the program began 21 years ago, over 4,750 books have been donated and 10,000 hours of reading have been volunteered for this one-day event.
“I absolutely love every minute and look forward to next time. Awesome – great experience! This is one of my favorite events of the year, thanks for having me! This is a great opportunity for all of us,” commented a DEAR Day reader after a previous event.
Another reader said, “I wish you well for many years to come. DEAR Day is a wonderful event. This reminds me of my younger days.”
D.E.A.R. Day has become an anticipated event throughout Waxahachie as volunteers around the community return to read year after year.
“We are very grateful for the continued and faithful support of Waxahachie Schools from the outstanding volunteers of the Waxahachie Community,” said Melissa Cobb, director of Partners in Education.
Cobb, on behalf of PIE, invites Waxahachie residents to join the district and “Drop Everything and Read” on Friday, Feb. 23 at 8:45 and 10:15 a.m. reading times. Guest readers will be placed in every classroom — grades PreK-6th. Turner PreK will read 8:45 a.m. All elementary campuses will read at 8:45 and 10:15 a.m., while Finley Junior High will read at 8:45 a.m. and Howard Junior High at 10:15 a.m.
