With it being the season of giving, the Brown Street Church of Christ is hosting a Thanksgiving lunch to bring together the community in the traditional way.
For the past 27 years, the church has hosted a free Thanksgiving meal for those who might otherwise go without. This year's lunch will take place Thanksgiving day, Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. — 1 p.m. in the church’s fellowship hall.
Organizers are expecting around the same amount of people that joined last year, which was about 450.
Community Outreach Deacon Chad Fletcher has been involved with the holiday event for the past five years. Through his experience over the years, he said he’s never heard a guest be disappointed with the meal or the company.
“They are all very thankful and upbeat. When everyone comes in, they just get to talking. They thank us for doing this and are very grateful,” Fletcher said.
Over the course of cooking, preparing, and serving the food, as well as the cleanup after, about 80 volunteers have put in the time to make this a special event. Several of those volunteering for the lunch are members from outside of the church. There are also the “habitual volunteers” that help out every year, Fletcher said.
Fletcher mentioned not much, if anything at all, will change this year. Folks who join the lunch can enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal with staples such as turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, desserts and more.
“It’s a great feeling to see people that need and that don’t have amenities. It makes you feel really good to be helping somebody,” Fletcher said.
He encourages everyone to join the fun and company of the people from Waxahachie.
For those who are unable to attend, the church is providing a delivery service. Fletcher said so far 150 individuals have made arrangements to have their meal delivered to them.
Fletcher said anyone could request this option and there are no criteria. It is suggested to make a reservation in advance, but the church will have a phone service set up on Thanksgiving Day to arrange deliveries. To set up delivery, call 972-937-8855.
He added, “If you call in, we’ll make it happen.”
“If you are at home and want some company and want to have a good time and enjoy some food, then come out. We will accept you and let you be on your way,” Fletcher said.
