WAXAHACHIE — This Saturday the Ellis County Master Gardeners bring their Pop-up Horticulture program to the farmers market.
Mattie Thompson will be under the white tent with “Container Gardening Gets Galvanized for Fall.” Galvanized containers will be used to demonstrate how to create a beautiful fall display. The presentation will begin at 9 a.m. and run all morning. Also, there will be some irises to give away, ready for planting. Stop by for a bag full. At the master gardener booth, you will find lots of helpful information on horticulture for the North Texas landscape. They have just received a new shipment of colorful brochures and publications containing the latest researched information. Their newly revised “Landscape Manuel for Ellis County” is for sale and is available in both hardcopy and zip drive ready for your home computer. October 28th will be the final day of the farmers market for 2017. Pumpkin crafts for kids and adults are being planned. Come to the Master Gardener booth for pumpkin painting with the help of some 4-H youth. While the kids are designing art, adults can create a fall pumpkin planter using succulents and cool weather crops.
Cool weather crops are here. Look for apples and pears, pumpkins and winter squash, sweet potatoes, onions, dark, flavorful greens such as kale, Swiss chard, mustard, spinach, and arugula, along with peppers, tomatoes, summer squash, zucchini, okra, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Our vendors offer bread, eggs, honey, plants, herbs, salsas, marinades, pickles, herbal vinegar, preserves, pastries, handmade crafts and much more. Look for lots of beautiful fall art and decorations. There is homemade Halloween jewelry, fall wreaths, pet crafts and fiber art.
The Yellow Farmhouse has this summer’s crop of cornmeal and wheat flour. Purchase it by the pound or pick up some of Heather’s personally developed muffin, brownie or bread mixes. Be sure to try some of their local farm raised beef and pork.
Our bakers sell cookies, muffins, pies, bread, chocolate bars, granola mixes and all sorts of pastries. The tamales are handmade on the Martinez farm, and Raindrop Studio bakes yummy peanut butter dog treats. Pure Country, our local cheese maker, has an outstanding selection of aged cheeses ready for your holiday needs.
