WAXAHACHIE — Keeping both the mind and body in tune with each other is the goal for the upcoming health and wellness expo set to take place on Thursday.
The Waxahachie Senior Activity Center will host the event from 8 - 11:30 a.m.
“This is a community health fair and it is open to the public. You don’t have to be a member of the senior center to come to participate in the health fair. We will have a lot of professionals here that will have a lot of information for you,” Waxahachie Senior Activity Center Director Jeanee Smiles said. “If you don’t need the information now you may need it in the future. You might need it for a family member or a loved one.”
Smiles stated there would be more than 40 healthcare vendors on site for people to visit with.
Some of these vendors include Baylor Scott and White Medical Center who will be offering free blood pressure checks, body mass index and blood glucose levels reading. Carter Eye Care will have its mobile clinic on site to do free cataract screening.
Medicare representatives will be available to answer questions about healthcare plans and provide information. Also, Walmart will offer flu shots for a fee.
"What we have tried to do with the Medicare specialists is to have them reschedule appointments with people on a one on one basis," Smiles said. "As you are coming through the expo you have a limited amount of time to really talk with them. We always have the center open so they can come back and meet with them.”
Other healthcare organizations that will take part in the event include home healthcare companies, assisted living facilities, non-profits such as Meals on Wheels of Johnson and Ellis County, and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s support groups. Information about the Senior Activity Center will also be available.
Smiles noted that this event helps to get vital information out to the public because these groups play an essential role in the community. She added that they are always looking for volunteers and a person might not know when they need their services.
The event is free and open to the public to attend. The expo will be hosted in the center’s multipurpose room.
Smiles shared that this is the seventh year of the health and wellness expo and it continues to grow. She noted that the public likes to have one place where they can get all of their health information at one time.
In addition to attending the event Smiles encourages the public to stay for a healthy $5 sub lunch and take a tour of the center. The Waxahachie Senior Activity Center is located at 122 Park Hills Dr. in Waxahachie.
