RIESEL — A first quarter Al Waits touchdown was nearly enough for an Italy Gladiator win in the District 8-2A opener against Riesel. But the missed opportunity to tack on the extra point proved to be the difference maker.
Riesel scored in the second quarter for the 7-6 win Friday night.
The loss dropped Italy to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in district play.
Kendrick Norwood led the Italy rushing attack with 81 yards on 14 carries, while Waits added 58 yards on his four carries. Devin Mapps also ran five times for 12 yards.
Gladiator quarterback completed both of his passes to Norwood, finishing 2-of-8 for five yards.
Though he did not throw one himself, Wallace did have a 24-yard interception return against the Indians. He also caused one fumble, as did fellow senior Gary Escamilla.
Donald Hayes led all Gladiators with 16 total tackles. Caleb Telatnyk added 10 tackles, while Anthony Lusk and Clay Riddle had nine. Riddle and Christion Wallace each recorded two tackles for loss.
The Gladiators return to action Friday, Oct. 20 on the road against Itasca. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
