ELLIS COUNTY — Ellis County Sheriff’s Deputies took a Palmer resident into custody following the search of an area around Farm-to-Market Road 879 on Tuesday afternoon.

Joe Lee Widner, 60, has been charged with injury to a child, elderly or disabled person with intent to cause bodily injury and assault causing injury to a family member. The exact area of the search was unspecified.

“I know responding elements requested Ellis County Sheriff’s Office's canine and the Department of Public Safety's Air (unit). However, while DPS's Air was en-route Widner was found. Ellis County Sheriff’s Office PIO and Sgt. Joe Fitzgerald said. “The ECSO canine (unit) was deployed and assisted with the search. He was found within moments of troops on the ground in the area.”

Radio traffic from the search stated that Widner was taken into custody at 3:47 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to the Wayne McCollum Detention Center’s website Widner was booked into the jail at 6:25 a.m. on Wednesday. No bond amount had been set and he remained in custody at the detention center as of 4:27 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12.
