WAXAHACHIE — The Southwestern Assemblies of God University volleyball team has claimed the top spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference after sweeping John Brown University in straight sets. Coming into Friday’s match-up, JBU and the Lady Lions were tied for the top spot.
Both teams came ready to compete and the scores of each set showed how close the competition was (25-21, 27-25, 25-16).
In the first set, junior Mollie McBride came up with back-to-back kills followed by a block to spark the Lady Lions momentum. SAGU’s Paulyae Dawkins earned SAGU’s final three points in the first set with three impressive kills.
The closest of the sets was the second, where the teams were matched nearly point for point. JBU led SAGU 22-18. Head Coach Hank Moore called a timeout, which seemed to light a fire in the Lady Lions. SAGU went on a nine-to-three run, winning the second set 27-25.
SAGU maintained the momentum in the third set and scored 12 points in a row.
SAGU’s Sophia Ivy had 34 assists. Senior Jessica Sodich had 12 kills, Kali Shaw had nine kills, Paulyae Dawkins had eight and Mollie McBride added seven kills. Madeleine Hartline had five assisted blocks, while Dawkins and Ivy added four assisted blocks. Celi Bruce had 25 digs and Kali Shaw added 16.
The Lady Lions competed against Bacone College on their home court at 11 a.m. but a final score was not ready as of press time.
