WAXAHACHIE — An emotional rendition of the gospel hymn, “How Great Thou Art,” echoed throughout the Waxahachie City Council Chambers on Tuesday night as Jade Flores express her thanks to the men that saved her life.

The police department honored George and Jorge Avalos with a life-saving award for pulling Flores out of her truck after it had flipped on July 1. The accident took place in the 4300 block of the N. Interstate Highway 35E service road during a rainstorm.

“I was just driving and my truck lost control. I tried to over correct it, but it flew off the road and hit a ditch. Then it flipped twice into the creek,” Flores said. “The smoke built up and I could not breathe for a while. I was sitting there trying to punch out a window. Out of nowhere, I hear someone say, 'close your eyes, close your eyes.' Then I was pulled out of the water.”

Flores stated that she thought that nobody was coming to help her. She feared that her life was soon to end.

“My phone fell off into my hand and it was still glitching. I was trying to have Siri call my dad so I could tell him that I love him,” Flores stated. “Fortunately, I was able to call him and let him know what happened because they pulled me out of the truck.”

George and his son, Jorge, happened upon the accident in an effort to avoid traffic. Driving off of the highway and onto the service road, the heroes saw that no one was helping and decided to act.

“Once we saw the truck there, he (Jorge) burst into action right a way. He (Jorge) asked 'if anyone was there' and sure enough she was there. He asked her, ‘if anybody else was in there,’” George said. “She said, ‘no, just me.’ He said, ‘close your eyes because I am fixing to bust this window open.’ That is what he did.”

A pair of pliers was used to break out the window after Jorge's unsuccessfully used his boots during a first attempt.

“I just hope that someone would do the same thing for me,” Jorge remarked. “It is a blessing that she is here and that is all you can ask for.”

George shared his son’s thoughts, stating the father-son duo is just grateful they could help Flores during her time of need.

Flores added she is thankful for the opportunity to meet her rescuers and thank them personally.

“I didn’t think that I was going to be able to meet you all,” Flores noted. “Everything happened so fast.”

Flores further expressed her thanks through song, as it was a very meaningful song that touched her heart.

She noted that she only sustained a minor injury to her back from the accident.

Waxahachie Police Chief Wade Goolsby told the council that there is no doubt that the actions of these men saved Flores’ life.
