WAXAHACHIE — In a day and a half, Ellis County residents have donated over 10 tons of hay to help animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey. The donations began arriving at the Waxahachie Tractor Supply on Tuesday afternoon.
“It has just been a bail of hay at a time. Our customers have just donated two big trailer loads of hay so far and are taking it down and donating it to our fellow Texans that are hurting right now,” Tractor Supply employee Gail McCraw said. “Our management team found a way to put it together and make it work. We have trucks and trailers that are ready to load it on and just take it down.”
McCraw explained that this is an effort being driven by customers, who have also donated the use of trucks and trailers to transport the materials.
According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas' website, the SPCA of Texas received a transfer of 123 un-owned cats from The Cattery Cat Shelter in Corpus Christi at the SPCA of Texas' Animal Rescue Center on Aug. 25.
“The SPCA of Texas is prepared to intake up to 300 animals affected by Hurricane Harvey if needed and will evaluate capacity on a daily basis after that,” the SPCA website stated. “This transfer frees up space in animal shelter facilities to make more room for animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey.”
Waxahachie Tractor Supply is also working to put together relief packages for displaced animals. These relief packages are tailored to each individual animal to meet their needs. The store as a whole has donated more than four tons of animal feed to relief efforts.
McCraw stated that people can visit the store to make a donation of animal feed but the store, at this time, cannot take monetary donations.
“We are so appreciative and we are so proud to be Texan. Texans don’t sit on their haunches and wait. They start helping," McCraw noted. "Everyone is doing what they can and doing a little bit at a time and it is turning into a huge effort.”
Residents who want to find out how they can donate can contact the staff at the Waxahachie Tractor Supply at 972-923-1988. The store is located at 1201 N. U.S. Highway 77 in Waxahachie. It is open 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday –Saturday and 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Sunday.
