Those with school age children most certainly know, but as a reminder to all, school starts back tomorrow, so we need to be mindful of the school zones and school buses.

Please pay attention to the posted speed limit in these areas, especially during the early morning and the afternoon. Many times, the lights may not be working properly in and around the school, and if they are not, please contact that district. Most school zones are active, meaning the lights are flashing, between the hours of 7—8:30 a.m. and then again between 2:30—4 p.m., which means you need to reduce your speed to the posted school zone speed. Also, it is illegal to use a cell phone in an active school zone between the times posted on the school speed limit signs. The driver cannot be texting or talking on the cell phone unless it is hands-free or you are stopped.

Please also be aware of school buses out in the mornings and afternoon. When a school bus is stopped for loading or unloading (red lights are flashing), you are not allowed to pass. Regardless, it is a best practice not to pass a stopped bus unless the driver waves you through.
