WAXAHACHIE — After months of suspense, the Brown Motel is one step closer to being demolished, as the property owners have scheduled a hazardous material inspection.

A series of code violations forced the business to close its doors and its residents to relocate. Problems with the building were first reported to the City of Waxahachie in September, which forced the city to issue a condemnation letter on Oct. 19, 2016.

Property Owner representative Dennis Little said the building was purchased earlier this year by a new set of owners.

“When the current owners, acquired it they said, ‘we need to look at a couple of options. So they went through an (evaluation) exercise and decided that it was probably not worth rehabilitating," Little said. "Determinations have been made that it does need to be demolished. To do that there are inspections that have to be made. Those are underway. As soon as that is complete, then a permit will be filed with the city. I don’t know if that is going to take two weeks or two months."

According to the Ellis County Appraisal District, the current property owners are Settlemyer Chisholm LLC, HRL Procurement LLC and Clay Sibley. The previous owner was Rajshree LLC.

The City of Waxahachie requires several steps hurdles to be cleared before a building can be demolished.

“They have to come down here to apply for a commercial permit. In this case, it is a commercial building so he could be required by state law to supply us with an asbestos survey,” Waxahachie Director of Building and Community Services Johnny Bray explained. “If he has that documentation and applies for a permit, we issue him a permit and then he demolishes the structure.”

Bray stated if the person applying for that permit has the asbestos survey with them then the permit is typically issued by the building department that same day. Demolition permits fees are $50. He added that no demolition permit had been filed as of 2 p.m. on Friday for the Brown Motel. The Brown Motel is located at 103 U.S. Highway 77 in Waxahachie.
