For the first time in district history, a Waxahachie ISD junior high band advanced to the Honor Band State Contest. And, for the first time in WISD history, a junior band finished in the top-10 of the state competition.

The Howard Symphonic 1 Band ranked 6th in the 2016-17 Texas Music Educators Association State Honor Band Contest.

The competition began with hundreds of middle schools classified as CC across Texas and 76 submitted recordings of their programs to be adjudicated in the Honor Band selection process. The top two recordings from each of 33 regions advanced to the area level. Each of the eight areas then advanced their top two to State, where recordings of 16 of some of the best middle school bands in both the state and nation were adjudicated head-to-head by master teachers in instrumental music education.

"To rank so highly amidst a field of consistent state finalist programs is an honor for our band program, our school district, and our community," said WISD Director of Public Relations Jenny Bridges in a district-issued release. "This kind of success would not be possible without the hard work of our students and the support of our parents, WISD administration, faculty and staff, and the community of Waxahachie."
