WAXAHACHIE — Giving children the tools to become successful in the classroom this year is the goal behind a school supply drive aiding the local Salvation Army.
The supply drive is being held at the Virginia Allwardt Allstate Insurance office through Thursday, Aug. 10. The supplies that the drive is looking to collect include crayons, map pencils, pencil bags, markers, glue, glue sticks, scissors and erasers.
Allstate employee Amanda Rangel said when she heard that the Salvation Army was going to come up short she wanted to lend a hand to help.
“My kids are currently attending the Salvation Army’s Boys and Girls Club for the summer program and they will be there after school with them. I was up there and the girls were talking and mentioned to me that they were going to be short 65 backpacks,” Amanda Rangel said. “I work for Allstate and I talked to the agent. We just asked if we could see if we could get the 65 backpacks for the Salvation Army.”
Rangel said the agent was able to purchase the backpacks but needs help in filling them with school supplies. The office has a limited amount of school supplies but not enough to fill all of the backpacks.
Rangel stated that the Salvation Army plays a significant role in the community with outreach efforts like this one and encourages people to stop and make a donation.
Residents who want to donate can stop by the office, located in Executive Court Suite 400A in Waxahachie, from 8:30 a.m. — 5:30 p.m.
