ENNIS — Businesses, non-profits and first responders still have the opportunity to signup for a booth to take part in the upcoming Ellis County Emergency Preparedness Fair.
The emergency preparedness fair connects residents with first responders and provides them with information to keep them safe during an emergency. The application deadline for booth space is 4 p.m. on Aug. 31, with the fair planned for Sept. 30 from 10 a.m.– 2 p.m. in downtown Ennis.
“Planning before an emergency is extremely important. During an emergency, everything is going wrong and you don’t have the time to put an emergency preparedness kit together. Sometimes the phones are out or the electric is out and you don’t have the time to find candles or purchase water. We want you to plan before hand,” Ellis County Emergency Management Coordinator Stephanie Parker said. “All of this is teaching you what to do before an emergency. So when an emergency hits you are much more prepared and you are much more able to handle that emergency on a calm level.”
Parker stated that they have already had 30-40 applications for booths this year, which includes first responders from around the county who will be on hand to showcase their equipment, answer questions and visit.
Some of the vendors include representatives from insurance companies who will provide information on what type of coverage a person would need for different events like a flood or a fire. They will tell people about the kind of documentation they need to have on hand after disaster strikes to give to an agent.
Construction companies will also be at the fair to educate residents about what to look for in a contractor and what licenses and qualifications they need to have.
“I think that we have a lot more varied industry that is involved this year. Our local emergency planning committee and our long term recovery committee are more involved this year,” Parker noted. “This year because it is our second year we are getting more and more people involved who want to be a part of it. They saw how great it was last year and they wanted to be a part of it.”
Parker estimated last years event saw around 1,000 people in attendee and is expecting around double this year.
The event will also feature giveaways that include a first aid kit from Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and a home generator from Ennis Logistics.
