ENNIS — A witness to a car accident lost his life after attempting to assist a motorist on Interstate Highway 45 in Ennis.

Ennis Police Officers responded to an accident at about 3:05 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11 near the northbound 251A exit on I-45.

“The first accident occurred there between a Buick Enclave and a Honda Civic. Both parties involved exited their vehicles and with minor injuries,” Ennis Police Lt. Fred Pontley said. “A witness to the accident stopped past the accident, exited his vehicle and began walking to the accident scene to help.”

Pontley stated that, at that time, a semi tractor-trailer collided with the vehicle involved in the first accident, lost control and struck the witness that was walking back to the accident scene." The witness, who identified as Amos Chibuikem Iweajunwa, 38, of Richmond, Texas died at the scene.

According to the accident report from the Ennis Police Department, the driver of the Freightliner semi-truck, Houston resident Kenneth Wayne, 47, was transported by American Medical Response ground ambulance to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

The accident is still under investigation by the Ennis Police Department at this time.
