WAXAHACHIE — Grass skirts, water slides and a date with "Moana" will be on the Friday agenda for many Waxahachie families.

On Friday, July 14, the Waxahachie Convention and Visitors Bureau invites the community out to historic downtown Waxahachie for the Summer Moonlight Movie featuring Walt Disney’s “Moana.”

Anita Brown, downtown development director and preservation officer for the City of Waxahachie, said this year’s event will be an excellent way to cool off and watch a family-friendly movie that is enjoyable for all.

“It’s going to be a really fun movie night downtown,” Brown said. “We normally do one animated film and one live action film each year, so we decided on “Moana” since it was really popular and had a cute theme around it.”

The day will commence with a giant water slide from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., followed by hula lessons from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and a "make your own grass skirt" station from 7 p.m. to 8:30 pm.

The movie, "Moana," begins at 9 p.m. There will also be free leis to match the night’s island theme.

According to IMDB, the Disney film is set in "Ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the Demigod Maui reaches an impetuous Chieftain's daughter's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out the Demigod to set things right." "Moana" is rated PG and has a runtime of one hour and 47 minutes.

In addition to being completely free, the movie night promotes community comradery and sociability, something that Brown believes has aided in its past success.

“We’re expecting a really great turnout this year,” Brown said. “A lot of people will just bring a cooler with a picnic lunch and spread out their blankets and lawn chairs. It’s really just a great, fun family night downtown.”

For those concerned about the heat, Brown said Friday’s events were designed to combat the grueling summer temperatures by structuring it to where kids can use the water slides during the day and then cool off with the movie once the sun goes down.
