RED OAK — Red Oak Independent School District welcomed its new district superintendent, Dr. Mike Goddard, and his wife, Dena, during a special reception at the high school Tuesday evening. Members of the community, as well as district staff, gathered to greet and listen to the new superintendent's direction for Red Oak ISD.

“I feel like I’ve won the lottery. It has been amazing the last couple of weeks. Our kids that finished up last week — I already miss them. I had a brief chance to meet them, now they are gone. But I get a chance to be with our staff and be a part of our community. My wife and I will be moving here in a week or two. I can’t wait to be a part of this community,” Goddard said.

Goddard said his immediate goals are to become involved and engaged with the kids at multiple levels.

“I am looking forward to speaking at the graduation Saturday,” Goddard said

"Soaring to new heights" is a motto Goddard is also starting.

“We are in a great position here. We will soar to new heights in many areas of academics, athletics and fine arts and other areas, as well,”

Donning a Mickey Mouse pin on his lapel, Goddard explained, "I’ve always liked Disney. I’ll tell you what it is to me, I look like Shrek. I’m not the prettiest guy in the world. It kind of lowers the defenses of our kids as a conversation point."

Besides being a huge Disney fan and visiting Disneyland every year, Goddard explained he also has an affinity for crazy socks as he raised his trouser leg to show his Captain America stockings.

“I have already found the Red Oak is very open and caring community. I cannot wait to become a part of it,” Goddard said.

Red Oak ISD board member John Hawkins said, "We are very excited to have Doctor Goddard and his wife to join the Red Oak Hawk family and are looking forward to great things to come to Red Oak."
