RED OAK — Two men used a firearm and large knife to rob a Red Oak Whataburger during the early morning hours Tuesday.
According to Red Oak Police Lt. Marc Schroeder, police are searching for two white or Hispanic males who entered the Whataburger, located at 215 South State Highway 342 in Red Oak, shortly after 2:25 a.m. Tuesday.
In the surveillance video provided by the Red Oak Police Department, the two suspects are seen sprinting across Highway 342 and into the Whataburger.
The first suspect through the door, a white or Hispanic male between the 16-22 years of age, immediately brandishes a firearm as he runs toward the front counter. This suspect was last seen wearing a black shirt, black pants and black shoes, along with a black toboggan on his head and a blue bandanna covering his face, according to Schroeder. The second suspect in the video is also believed to be a white or Hispanic male between 16-22 years of age and was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes, along with a Maroon Texas A&M University ball cap on his head and a blue bandanna covering his face.
"During the robbery, the first suspect brandished a firearm and the second suspect brandished a large knife. The surveillance video also shows a third subject in a vehicle that drops the two suspects off just prior to the robbery," stated Schroeder in a Red Oak Police Department release. He noted Red Oak Police were dispatched to the reported aggravated robbery at 2:57 a.m. The dispatcher advised the responding units that employees stated they were just robbed at gunpoint, he added.
"The first suspect grabs the manager and forces her into the office at gunpoint and has her open the safe," Schroeder stated.
In the video, the manager opens the unlocked safe and points inside. During this time, Schroder noted the second suspect is removing cash from the register located at the drive-thru window. He can also be seen with a large knife in his right hand as he uses the left hand to grab the money before stuffing the loot in his left-front pocket.
The first suspect then ordered the manager to empty the safe into a black bag, noted Schroeder. He is seen holding the firearm against her left shoulder as she empties the safe.
Schroeder stated both suspects fled at 2:31 a.m. and ran west toward Main Street after the robbery — in the opposite direction in which they came. Time stamps on the surveillance video show the aggravated robbery lasted approximately six minutes.
Data maintained by CrimeReports.com shows the Red Oak Police Department has responded to 79 thefts or robberies since Nov. 16, 2016. Of those, only six have been reported as robberies. The incident that occurred Tuesday is not yet listed on the report.
According to Schroeder, the Red Oak Criminal Investigation Division is conducting additional investigations in an attempt to identify the suspects. Those with information are encouraged to contact Red Oak Police Sgt. Gary Dollar at (469) 218-7710 or GDollar@redoaktx.org.
