Herbert Lee Massey was born October 14, 1934. He passed away April 9, 2017.
Herbert was born to Homer and Louise Goodfellow Massey in San Angelo, Texas. He graduated from North Texas State University with a B. A. in music. Larger than life, Herbert was a musical legend with a heart of gold and a flair for the arts. He served as the music coordinator of the San Angelo Symphony and organized several musicals in San Angelo. Herbert sang tenor with the Dallas Opera and Dallas Symphony. He later became a choral teacher for Dallas and Plano ISDs.
Herbert was well-known for entertaining friends, cooking gourmet meals, and renovating houses. He often traveled to NYC and was privileged to sing opera in Austria. Herbert was an active choral member of First United Methodist Church Dallas, along with being active with Dallas Pro Musica and Wagner Society. He was a caregiver to many and was loved for his big heart, sense of humor, and storytelling.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother and sister-in-law, James and Betsy Massey. He is survived by his nephew, Sam Massey; his niece, Lauren Devore and her family (husband George and children, George, Katie, and Madeline); and his special friend, Judy Maus Moore. The family would like to thank the staff at A-Med Hospice of Austin, especially Nina, Dee, Laurel, Connie, and Abby. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, April 27, at 3:00 pm at First United Methodist Church Dallas at 1928 Ross Ave, Dallas, TX 75201.
