NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — Texas State's Ariel Ortiz was selected as the Sun Belt Conference Community Coffee Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

The junior shortstop from Waxahachie helped lead the Texas State softball team to a 3-0 record last week — which included a 2-0 record against Coastal Carolina to start Sun Belt play.

Ariel Ortiz went a combined 7-for-11 in Texas State's three games last week, including two wins at Coastal Carolina, which entered the series on a 12-game win streak and receiving a top-25 vote. Of Ortiz's seven hits, six went for extra bases — three doubles, a triple and two home runs.

She opened the week a 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a home run, double and triple in an 11-2 win over Incarnate Word. In the series opener at Coastal Carolina, Ortiz was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI on a sac fly. In the second game of the doubleheader against the Chanticleers, the junior was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer to left field.

Ortiz, who now co-leads TXST with seven home runs, slugged 1.636 last week and owned a .615 on-base percentage.

Ortiz also earned College Sports Madness Sun Belt Player of the Week honors, which does not have separate awards for hitters and pitchers.


In their return to action Wednesday evening in Houston, the Bobcats drilled the University of Houston 7-0. Ortiz finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.

On Thursday, Texas State Sports Properties and Texas State University Athletics announced Spectrum Sports will broadcast the rematch between the Bobcats and Longhorns when they square-off in San Marcos April 5 at 6 p.m.

According to Texas State Athletics, the Bobcats defeated the Longhorns 2-1 on March 1 behind an Ariel Ortiz's two-run home run and a stellar pitching performance from Randi Rupp. The Bobcats have won two of the last three against UT, including a 9-5 victory at Bobcats Softball Stadium last season.
