WAXAHACHIE — In hindsight, a double-play ground ball with a pair of ducks on the pond is potentially all that stands between the Waxahachie Indian baseball team and an undefeated record after battling through two stiff tournament fields. For those efforts, (9-1) Waxahachie has garnered a new state ranking and team accolade courtesy of TexasHighSchoolBaseball.com.
Before heading to Corsicana for a three-day tournament that begins Thursday at 9 a.m. against Waco Robinson, the Indians were issued a THSB 5A No. 4-ranking and named the 5A Game Grade Team of the Week Runner-up.
Waxahachie finished second in the team of the week race to (9-1) No. 12 Magnolia, who went 4-0 with wins against 6A No. 3 Coppell and No. 5 Fort Bend Kempner. The Bulldogs outscored their opponents 24-8 over the weekend.
Frisco Reedy, a first-year program, received the nod as the 5A Game Grade Team of the Week Honorable Mention.
After the 6-4 loss to Lindale Feb. 25 in the finale of the 26th annual Rose City Classic in Tyler, the Indians reeled off five consecutive wins over the weekend in the annual Robert Dulin Memorial Tournament. The tournament was highlighted by wins over THSB 5A preseason No. 4 Whitehouse and Texas High School Coaches Association 5A No. 2 Corsicana.
The Indians also outscored their opponents 33-10 over the course of the three days at Richards Park in Waxahachie.
No. 4 Waxahachie will be tested again this weekend as it has a pair of games against No. 8 Forney on Friday at 11:30 a.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m., along with games against Robinson, North Forney and Robert E. Lee High Schools.
