WAXAHACHIE — Central Presbyterian Church will observe Ash Wednesday with a simple supper followed by worship, communion and the imposition of ashes as a symbolic reminder of the words “you are dust and to dust you shall return.”
All are invited to join this traditional preparation for the Lenten Season at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, downstairs at the church, 402 N. College St. Communion at CPC is open. You need not be a member of the church or a Presbyterian to participate. All who trust in Jesus as Lord are welcome to receive the sacrament.
Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent, is an opportunity to focus individually and collectively on our humanity, said the Rev. Matt Curry, pastor.
“When we speak of ashes and dust, we are recognizing that our total dependence is on the grace of God,” Curry said, “and we ask God to remember our creation and to breathe new life into our dusty lives again.”
Lent recalls the 40-day fast of Jesus in the wilderness after his baptism, as well as the 40-day fast of Moses on Mount Sinai. Its themes include self-examination, penitence, and preparation as the people of God journey together toward Holy Week.
