DALLAS — After rolling through Dallas Samuell and Dallas Bryan Adams on Wednesday, the (17-4) No. 20 Red Oak Lady Hawks dropped their only Thursday tilt in heartbreaking fashion. Red Oak fell to 6A Dallas Skyline 48-47 on the second day of the 77th annual Dallas ISD Holiday Invitational.
Red Oak defeated Samuell 65-27 to open tournament play before returning to action six hours later to hand Bryan Adams a 20-point loss, 66-46. The Lady Hawks will now switch gears back to District 10-5A action, as they will make the short trip Waxahachie for an 8 p.m. tipoff against the Lady Indians on Tuesday, Jan. 1.
Following a second home loss in district play on Tuesday, Dec. 13, Red Oak head coach Jeff Sutton said the No. 20 Lady Hawks “didn’t get the easiest draw” to start district. But even after falling in back-to-back nail biters to No. 9 Mansfield Legacy and No. 1 Mansfield Timberview, Sutton noted that, whether the schedule is front or back loaded does not matter. Any of the teams in the district can win if you do not show up to play on any given night.
He also, half-kiddingly but with an exhale, said he is “open to suggestions” as to how the Lady Hawks can eliminate the “bad quarter” that has cost them all four losses this season. Even more perplexing for the head coach is that the hiccup frame has come at different times in the first three losses — the fourth quarter against Lancaster, first quarter versus Legacy and the second Tuesday night against Timberview.
