OVILLA – For 26 years, the city of Ovilla has hosted its annual Heritage Day celebration. This year, the event, which is themed “Our Children Are Our Future,” will be held Saturday, Sept. 24.

The celebration kicks off at 9 a.m. with a parade. The one-mile parade route will proceed on Ovilla Road (Farm-to-Market 664) from Ovilla Road Baptist Church to Main Street and then through downtown Ovilla to City Hall.

Prizes will be offered in the categories of Best Vehicle Wrap, Most Unique, Best Theme Presentation, Most Spirited and Mayor’s Choice. Grand marshals will be the Eagle Scouts from Ovilla’s Boy Scout troop.

According to Doug Hunt, who is in charge of the day’s celebrations, more than 150 vendors and exhibitors have been invited to participate in the Heritage Day sales bazaar. A wide variety of unique and handmade products as well as food and beverages will be available for purchase, along with free parking.

Throughout the day, entertainment will be provided by local choirs and talent as well as nationally recognized entertainers. The performances will begin at 10:30 a.m. beginning with Bill White, who was named Entertainer of the Year by the Texas International Music Association in 2007. White also serves on the advisory board of the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in Carthage, Texas.

For the children, there will be an entertainment zone that will include pony rides, a petting zoo, jump houses and an obstacle course.

Several hundred people typically attend Heritage Day. Even with the threat of rain during last year’s 25th anniversary celebration, residents still came out and had a good time, Hunt said.

Heritage Day is a celebration of both the history and the promise of Ovilla that was begun in the mid-1970s by the then Ovilla Chamber of Commerce to encourage a feeling of community and raise awareness of the city and its many attractions.

Ovilla was founded in 1844 and is one of the oldest towns in the area; it has several registered historic sites.

Those interested in participating in the parade or as a vendor in Ovilla’s Heritage Day festival should contact Kim Gutierrez at the city of Ovilla by calling 972-617-7262 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
