Families that have put off getting out with the children for a fun day of activity now have the opportunity by attending Waxahachie YMCA’s annual Make it a Play Date.

The event, which is open to the public, will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 16, at the YMCA facility located at 100 YMCA Drive, just north of the U.S. Highway 287 Bypass.

“The basic purpose for this event is to encourage kids and their parents to come to the Y and encourage them to commit to having active days and to promote a healthier lifestyle,” said Chante Douglas, membership and wellness director for the Waxahachie YMCA. “This event is the largest family health day emphasis in the country, and it’s free to the public.”

Douglas noted that the morning would be packed with events including structured games, a 1-mile fun run, hula hoop contest, dunking booth, sack races, and an egg hunt. Fresh fruits and other healthy snacks will be available to all participants throughout the morning.

“We will have a fitness team here that will take about 30 minutes to present a fitness seminar and will deal with subjects including Preventing Childhood Obesity, and How to Read Food Labels and Count Calories. We are also asking children to bring their favorite music for a Zumba dance for the whole family,” she said.

The Waxahachie Fire Department will also be on hand along with a local dentist office that will give out information on oral hygiene.

“What we want to do through this event is to help parents find time for structured play with their children and develop healthier habits,” Douglas said. “It’s hard enough for families to find time to do things together during school months, and so we just want to encourage families to come out to the Y and have a good time.
