MIDLOTHIAN — Walnut Grove Middle School held its second annual Spring Ice Cream Social for former students and staff members Thursday afternoon in the campus cafeteria.

Students who have moved on to high school and current and former teachers gathered to share memories of past experiences and catch up with what they are doing today. The come-and-go event was sponsored by the WGMS Student Council.

“Last year we had about 200 former students and we are expecting at least that many this year,” said Margie Nisbett, instructional applications teacher and event coordinator. “We invite those (past) teachers who we know where they are and the students.”

The Midlothian High School senior class of 2010 was the first students to attend WGMS.

“I love seeing the teachers,” Zandy Huff, MHS student, said.

Past yearbooks filled the tables and videos from previous years played on the screen in the cafeteria so the students could look back and remember their time at the campus.

“They all look so much more grown up,” Randa Darnell, eighth-grade language arts teacher said. “It’s been really good to see how they have turned out.”

Parent Johanna Cook dropped in for the social. She has a child attending WGMS and two children who attended middle school at the campus and have moved on.

Nisbett said most students stopped in for a few minutes during down time between other afternoon events.

There were lots of hugs and laughter as guests enjoyed sundaes piled high with toppings and reconnected with their teachers and classmates to reminisce about their past middle school experience.
