UNDERSTANDING COPYRIGHTS & PATENTS

Presented by Larry Hamilton of the North Texas Small Business Development Technology Assistance Center in Dallas, attendees will be given an overview of patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets, and will learn how to secure the optimal type of protection for their businesses. Topics will include patent and trademark searching, cost effective options for protecting intellectual property, licensing, provisional patents and more.

STARTING A SMALL BUSINESS

Got a business idea that won’t go away? Have you always had the entrepreneurial spirit but just don’t know where to start?

The Navarro College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will sponsor a free workshop on How to Start a Small Business on Tuesday, March 10, from 10:00 a.m. – Noon, at the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, 102 YMCA Drive, Waxahachie.

Robin Lasher, experienced entrepreneur and Director of Navarro College SBDC, will present the workshop and will introduce attendees to the “nuts and bolts” of starting their own small business. Attendees will explore the feasibility of their business ideas and learn the basics of registering a business, choosing a legal form of business ownership, filing proper permits and licenses, and evaluating financial options.

HOW TO GET GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS

Do you think your business is too small to get a government contract? Are you intimidated by all the paperwork and red tape? The Navarro College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will sponsor a workshop on Thursday, March 26, from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, 102 YMCA Drive, Waxahachie.

The workshop, presented by George Kitamura from the Center for Government Contracting of North Texas, will show that the government contracting process at the federal, state and local level is simple. Keys to successful bidding are in understanding the unique aspects, and how much help is available to businesses. George will begin by removing the intimidation factor, confusion and complexity and will show attendees how to succeed in government contracting.

THE TEXAS ROADMAP-Writing a Winning Business Plan

Have you ever heard the saying, “If you don’t know where you’re going, be careful because you might get there”? Starting a business without a plan is like going on a trip without a map. A business plan steers you in the right direction to start, build and manage your business. Attendees will receive The Texas Roadmap, a 63 page planning guide, and a copy of QuickBooks Simple Start accounting software.

On Tuesday, March 24, from 10:00 a.m. – Noon, the Navarro College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will sponsor a session on Writing a Winning Business Plan at the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, 102 YMCA Drive, Waxahachie.

CREATING AN EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK

On Wednesday, March 4 from 10:00 a.m. – Noon, the Navarro College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will sponsor a workshop on developing policies and procedures for small businesses. It will be held at the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, 102 YMCA Drive, Waxahachie.

If so, then let us help you create a basic employee handbook geared toward the small business that has made the jump to the next level. SALES TAX WORKSHOP – Knowing Your Responsibilities

Do I need to register for sales tax? How much sales tax do I charge? What is taxable and what isn’t? These are some very common questions on the minds of business owners, and it will be these types of questions that will be answered during a workshop on Thursday, March 12, 10:00 a.m. – Noon, at the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, 102 YMCA Drive, Waxahachie.

This free workshop is sponsored by Navarro College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and will be presented by the State Comptroller’s Office. Some, but not all, of the topics covered will be seller’s and purchaser’s responsibilities, record keeping, exemptions and audits. Attendees will be able to ask very specific sales tax questions about their own businesses.
