Shackelford Elementary students were treated to an all-day, end-of-year party on Friday, complete with wet and dry inflatable houses, a live DJ and hot dogs for lunch.

Playgrounds on three sides of the building had inflatables with water slides, while at least three more bounce houses were set up in the school cafeteria.

“We always have two big parties for the kids each year and this is the big one,” said Lisa Young, PTO member and organizer of the event. “The kids are really having a blast this year with the water inflatables and the live DJ has really added to the fun by having hula hoop and limbo contests.”

The event, which got under way at 8:30 a.m. and continued until about 2:15 p.m., saw students, kindergarten, first and second grades playing on the wet rides in the morning, and then playing on the inside inflatables in the afternoon, while the third, fourth and fifth grades had the opposite schedule.

Students not only participated in the organized fun, but due to water draining onto sections of the playgrounds, some students enjoyed playing in the mud.

“All these kids are really having a great time – this event is all about them,” Shackelford Elementary reading specialist Jorien Bowens said. “I’ve taught in several schools in the Dallas area through the years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a school that had events for students like Shackelford.”

The extravaganza was sponsored by the Shackelford PTO and was the result of several fundraisers through the year by the organization.
