Preparations are under way for this year’s Ellis County Relay for Life – and Karen Mathiowetz is spearheading the special fundraiser.

A member of Kaleb’s Team, Mathiowetz and others are putting together a cookbook, “Cooking Up a Cure.”

“We are asking everyone to submit recipes in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of someone that lost their battle with cancer,” Mathiowetz said. “We are asking for $1 donation per recipe to help defray the cost of production. All profits of the sale of the cookbooks will benefit Relay for Life.”

Morris Press will publish “Cooking Up a Cure,” which will be a three-ring binder cookbook “full of wonderful recipes,” Mathiowetz said.

Depending on submissions from everyone, the cookbook is expected to have from 700 to 900 recipes.

“We hope everyone will contribute and purchase the books,” Mathiowetz said. “This is a lasting way to remember someone that has and is battling cancer and even help those that will be diagnosed in the future. Hopefully our efforts will help eradicate cancer.”

The deadline for submission of recipes is Feb. 28.

“We hope to have the books ready for delivery by the end of April,” Mathiowetz said. “We will hand-deliver all books pre-ordered by Ellis County residents when they arrive. Cookbooks also will be available for purchase at the Plaid Donkey in Waxahachie and the Uptown Café in Italy.”

The community is asked to submit recipes and to let organizers know who the recipes are in honor or memory of. Submit recipes and donations to Karen Mathiowetz, 504 Venice Drive, Italy, TX 76651.

“Send them as early as possible, so you don’t miss the deadline,” Mathiowetz said.

The cost of “Cooking Up a Cure” is $18.95, with a pre-order/pre-pay price of $15.95 ($3 savings).

Pre-orders will be accepted until March 15 by submitting the following information – name, physical address (for free delivery in Ellis County), mailing address (add shipping charge), number of books ordered, city, state, zip code, telephone number, with your check made payable to Kaleb’s Team. There will be no extra charge for hand delivery in Ellis County. To have the cookbook mailed outside of Ellis County, add $6 for shipping and handling. Make checks payable to Kaleb’s Team.
