Swimming is not just for fun this summer – it’s a way to cool off during what may become known as the greatest heat wave since 1980.

Optimist Swimming Pool is providing relief for scores of local residents – and not just kids, but parents and grandparents as well.

Red Oak resident Kathrine Poppe brought her three children and one of their cousins to the pool Wednesday afternoon.

“We try to make it out here at least once or twice a week,” she said.

Denice Carney relaxed on the edge of the pool while watching five of her grandchildren splashing in the water and going down the curved slide.

“It’s just a great way to cool off – I love bringing them to the pool, especially during this heat,” she said.

One of her grandchildren, Jacob Carney, a fifth-grader at Clift Elementary School, was in constant motion as he splashed and swam in the pool.

“This is only my third time to be here at this pool and there’s only one reason to be here – that is to swim,” he said.
