Jonathan H. Poston, director of the Southwest Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will speak at a meeting, sponsored by Historic Waxahachie Inc. at 7 p.m. Monday, May 23, at the recently restored MKT Depot located on South Rogers Street.

According to a program sent out by Historic Waxahachie Inc., Poston has an incredible background in preservation – from interpretation of historic sites, preservation programs, revolving funds and planning and zoning advocacy, and has received many awards in the preservation field.

“We wanted to be sure that prospective members and other guests were invited to this event,” said Becky Kauffman, Waxahachie Heritage Preservation Commission chairperson and board member of Historic Waxahachie Inc. “Historic Waxahachie Inc. has been partnering with the city on the restoration of the depot and paying for a MKT caboose that hopefully will be on display on tracks in one or two months.”

Kauffman said the organization has tried for the past 15 years to purchase the depot from the railroad.

“We are very pleased that the city stepped forward at this time, in spite of these uncertain financial times we’re experiencing,” she said, saying that funds have been available through the Texas Incremental Reinvesting Zone. “TIRZ funds have to be reinvested in a specific TIRZ area in and around the central business district.

“We are very fortunate to have Mr. Poston to speak to us – he’s a fantastic speaker and the timing is really good considering this month is National Preservation Month,” she said.

Refreshments will be served and tours of the building will be available.
