MIDLOTHIAN — Midlothian ISD Education Foundation will host its seventh annual golf tournament Friday, Sept. 16, at Mansfield National Golf Club.
Registration and lunch are at 11 a.m., with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. followed by an awards ceremony.
“The golf tournament is the flagship fundraiser for MEF,” executive director Kristin Zastoupil said. “This fundraiser supplies one-third of our yearly budget.”
Many sponsors and donors have provided door prizes and gifts for this year’s tournament. Some of the prizes include two wedge golf clubs, a pack of a dozen golf balls, golf bags, a four pack of green fees and many other golf prizes.
“Every golfer goes home with a prize,” Zastoupil said.
The golf tournament’s format is a four-person scramble with a shotgun start. Each team will start at a different hole on the golf course, so all of the teams start at the same time. Each of the four players in a team will tee off at each hole. The best shot is selected and the rest of the team members play their second shot from that spot. All of the shots after the tee-off are played this way.
“The four-man scramble is a common format for golf tournaments,” tournament chair and foundation vice president Randy Denton said. “It allows amateur players to play a better, quicker and more enjoyable golf game.”
The awards ceremony for the golf tournament is conducted differently to most other golf tournaments.
“We draw names for the door prizes while the golfers are out playing,” Zastoupil said. “It allows a lot of golfers to take a half-day off from work to eat, play and get home with their prize by 5 or 6 p.m.”
Players can also stay at the clubhouse after they are done playing to watch the team prizes be awarded. Pro-shop golf credits of $100, $75 and $50 per player are awarded for first, second and third place teams, respectively. The last place team will win a free golf swing analysis from Edwin Watts for each team member. Prizes in the men and women’s divisions are also awarded for longest drive and closest to the pin. Any golfer that makes a hole-in-one will get a new car from Chuck Fairbanks Chevrolet.
“We’ve been very fortunate this year to have so many businesses and private individuals step up to sponsor this year’s tournament,” Denton said.
This year’s platinum sponsor is VLK Architects. The gold sponsors include BOSC Inc., BRI Roofing & Sheet Metal LLC, First Southwest Company, Linebarger, Goggan, Blair & Sampson LLP and MidTexas International Center Inc.
“We have a lot of long-standing sponsors and donors that come out every year and make this fundraiser possible,” Zastoupil said. “We’re expecting about 100 golfers to come out this year.”
The foundation’s mission is to generate and distribute resources to enrich, maintain and expand programs needed to meet MISD’s stated mission of excellence in education.
