MIDLOTHIAN — A Midlothian teen with Down syndrome recently competed in the 2011 Miss Texan Teen Pageant.

Jaime Lollar, 17, was a state finalist and advanced to National American Miss in Los Angeles.

“We hope that we can show the world that special needs kids can do special things,” said James Lollar, Jaime’s father. “They can still do things like any other kid, even though they’re special needs.”

The Lollars entered Jaime into the pageant after a family friend suggested it to them.

“We didn’t expect her to win, but we thought it would be fun for her,” said Jay Lollar, Jaime’s mother. “It was pretty exciting and the first time we had ever done anything like it.”

Jaime competed against 140 other girls from Texas. The contestants performed a choreographed dance routine and participated in a formal wear competition.

To qualify for the Miss Texas Teen Pageant, Jaime had to have good grades, mail a letter to enter and be interviewed with six judges, who asked her two or three questions each. Jaime told her parents one of the questions the judges asked her was, “If you could change anything about your school, what would it be?” Jaime, a junior at Midlothian High School, replied she wouldn’t change anything: “I like my school.”

Jaime received a state finalist trophy, a Spirit of America award on her resume and an academic achievement award for three years of good grades in school.

“I liked the dressing up and meeting all of the other girls,” Jaime said. “I especially liked the dance part.”

Jaime has modeled several times for major department stores including Dillard’s, Macy’s and Wal-Mart.

“She modeled in the Wal-Mart Shopper for their ‘Backyard Adventures,’ ” Jay said. “We’re really proud of that one.”

Jaime is continuing her modeling career, modeling in Fort Worth at the Ridgmar Mall.

“We do this for her,” Jay said. “We couldn’t force her to do it if she didn’t want to.”

The Lollars said they probably won’t enter Jaime in another beauty pageant, but they hope she continues to model as long as she enjoys it.

The Lollars expressed their appreciation to Jaime’s pageant sponsors: Dr. Morgan DDS, Brookshire’s and Walgreens of Midlothian, Liberty Cheer Team, Midlothian Veterinary Clinic and Midwest Exploration Company in Edmond, Okla.
