MIDLOTHIAN — Midlothian’s A.H. Meadows Library will begin offering audiobooks and e-books for checkout Sept. 1.

A.H. Meadows Library is joining the Northeast Texas Digital Consortium, an online collection of shared e-books and audiobooks.

“This is great for the library. It’s sure to draw in younger and tech-savvy patrons,” librarian Susie Yarbro said.

The Northeast Texas Digital Consortium uses OverDrive, a digital distributor of e-books and audiobooks, to fulfill download requests. At the Northeast Texas Digital Consortium website, patrons can view the entire collection of e-books and audiobooks and download content to their desktop or mobile devices.

“You need to download the OverDrive application and have a library card,” Yarbro said.

Midlothian users will have to select “A. H. Meadows” from a list and enter their library card number when checking out.

“Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of devices including iPod, Sony Reader, iPad, iPhone and many others,” Yarbro said.

The available e-books are published in Adobe Open EPUB and PDF formats, meaning they are compatible with the Nook, Sony Readers and most digital readers. Amazon’s Kindle is not compatible with either of these formats, but users can expect file formats compatible with the Kindle to appear sometime this year. Audiobooks are available in MP3 and WMA formats. Videos are available in WMV format.

“There is a limit of five items at a time because the library is still building its digital collection,” Yarbro said, adding that Meadows patrons can check out 15 items from the library at a time, which totals to 20 items. The normal checkout period of 14 days also applies to e-books and audiobooks. The downloaded files are encrypted to become void after the 14 days are up. There are no late fees.

A.H. Meadows Library is the 10th library in the northeast Texas area to join the consortium. A link to the NTDC website will be added to the Meadows website – http://library.midlothian-isd.net — when the library joins the consortium.
